"Look, nee-san! The Sakura Blossoms are falling!"
The young boy tugged at his sister's kimono sleeve, his other hand extending to show her the blossoms that slowly drifted to the ground outside. Ah, so much like a child still.. Mother was definetely present in him. Without a word Tomoe rose up and shut the leather bond diary that she had been keeping for a few days now. It had been a simple gift that Kiyosato had offered her, that and many pots of flowers. Did the young man not see the affection she was giving him? Enishi whined and softly gave his sister another tug when the woman had frozen in her tracks.
"Neee-san!"
"Shh, Enishi. Manners."
Tomoe smiled endearingly and laid her free hand against the untidy mess of brown hair. Pointless combing it, it would always return to its former self. The moonlight led their path into the darkness and the wind seemed to turn all its attention on her, the cold of spring licking at her snow white flesh. Not that much was exsposed. She tilted her head up and starred at the glowing sakura blossoms drift from the tree branches and whirl around in the air. Kirei.. After a few minutes Tomoe turned and led Enishi back indoors. In the corner of her eye she saw a the golden orb that lingered over Edo turn an ominous red. At that time, she thought nothing of it. But in the morning she had regretted turning her back to it.
"Gomen nasai gozaimasu, Yukishiro-san.. Akira-san was killed in the line of duty. His body was found on the streets with the decapated corpses of those he had meant to protect. He died an honorable death.. Be proud. They were able to recover something from his body." The samurai reached into his gi and removed a simple tanto placing it beside Tomoe and Kiyosato's mother. The two of them starred at the object as the man bowed and took his leave.
The mother reached out hesitantly and held it close to her breast, where her breaking heart lied. But as a mother can do when even her child is murdered she offered up what love and comfort she could have to another. Extending her hand she offered the tanto, her voice as calm and unwavering as it could be. "Here, Tomoe. Kiyosato would have wanted you to have it."
"...Arigatou."
Everything seemed to be painted red with the blood of her first and childhood love. Outside chimes jingled in the spring time breeze and near by her door she could hear the gossiping women speak, their shadows clearly visible behind the shoji screen door. Tomoe did not glance at them nor speak a word, simply remaining in the same kneeled position she had been since her would have been mother in law had left her.
"I head he left so he could honors from the Shogun!"
"Hai! He wanted to be more a 'man' for Tomoe!"
"She's always putting on such eres," the last word was exaggerated and a clear hint of dissaproval rang in the note. The women around the last speaker agreed in mutters, adding more fire to the flames. Only one woman disagreed, only one woman denied it being Tomoe's fault.. But what was one voice in a crowd of many? The guilt washed over her wave by wave and the pain ripped at her virgin heart as if it were a delicious mortal to be devoured. The blissfully ignorant Enishi had entered the room, how long ago? THe girl tried to focus, tried to hide the pain as she had when mother died demo...
"Nee-san, what's wrong?" No answer. "Nee-san?" The voices behind the door silenced as they listened in. "Why won't you talk to me?" Enishi ran over to his sister in concern and shook the girl by her shoulders, desperate to invoke some time of response. "Nee-san, what's wrong with you?!" Tomoe could hear his sobs as his face burried against the soft fabric of her kimono. And unwillingly she allowed one tear to be released from her eye. And with this tear, she vowed it would be the last.
